Tuskegee Airmen Nurse Lecture
On November 8, 2018, Mrs. Pia Jordan, Director of the Tuskegee Army Nurses Project, presented a lecture detailing the military and nursing contributions of the nurses who served the DOTAs, or the Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen. Nurses such as her late mother, Mrs. Louise Lomax Winters, were commissioned as Lieutenants in the United States Armed Forces to care for minority soldiers during the early years of military desegregation in the United States. The lecture was sponsored by the Mobile Medical Museum in conjunction with the University of South Alabama's College of Nursing. Edith Mitchell, the namesake of the EMHI, was also honored. Mrs. Mitchell not only cared for the DOTAs as a member of the Tuskegee Nurse Cadet Corps, but also was the founder of the Carver State Technical College's LPN Program, the first nursing program for minorities located in Mobile, Alabama. The Carver State LPN Program, which later affiliated with Southwest State Technical College, is now commonly known as the Bishop State Community College's School of Nursing of Mobile, Alabama.
